I am trying to figure out how I want to lay out my garage, and I thought I'd ask what you guys are doing for workbench, cabinet, and shelving. I've looked at turnkey systems, but they are pricey, and I've looked at individual component building but that seems like it will be hard to plan and unify.

Anyone have any setups they'd like to share? Any revelations or suggestions of what to do (or what not to do) with pegboards, workbenches, etc?

I had a friends garage who made like a little mini second level in his garage. It was about 3 feet from the ceiling to the shelf and was used for storage bins. something like this but a bit more space.

I also found this which looks like it might be useful.

I also like those things that you can attach a bike to and pull it up towards the ceiling.

I know none of these are workbenches but it is useful tips for storing a plethora of stuff, including tools.

Man, mine is so embarrassing right now. Hopefully we get a nice weekend so I can pull nearly everything out of the garage, clean it up and re-organize.

This is the most recent one I've got. It's decent sized. Room for two stools (not shown), and is close to the tools.

Oh man, A beverage fridge and everything. That's something I'll definitely have to duplicate.

I've been trawling Craigslist for a good 42/40" Craftsman roller toolbox also, hoping for a good deal. Those things are pricey!

Take pics if you do!

I'm trying to avoid the same thing with mine. I got a set of shelves from Ace, but that's about all I have so far.

I like this one, uses the space in front of the water heater well.

Also, I think I will duplicate your air hose reel, that will be handy to have.

I should build those hanging shelves for my garage. Storage is tight. Unless I want to put cars outside. Like that's going to happen.

Just don't buy the $150 from Lowes. The internal spring broke after 13 months of use, and the force from the unraveling spring caused so much vibration I lost 1 lag bolt. I now have to find a new place to mount my new reel.

I built my own workbench and shelving to fit exactly where I had space. Over the years the amount of tools and equipment has increased dramatically, which has forced me to put things wherever they fit, not necessarily the best spot.

For example: got a big vertical air compressor a few years back, but the only place to put it was right next to my workbench and the vice mounted there. I often curse the close proximity of the air outlet to the vice. So if I end up not moving in the next couple months I will be rebuilding the workspace in the garage.

So my advice is to have things as modular as possible. When I build my next garage everything will be able to move if I need to re-arrange. Somethings will be easier than others (like tables and tool boxes with locking casters), while some will require two people or a dolly to move, but everything can be restructured if needed.

I called some re modelers and picked up used kitchen cabinets for almost nothing. They work great for stuff that is not too heavy.

That's a good idea, I may try calling around.

I use an old picnic table as a work bench. I really need to renovate the place.

I have had my share of parking lot mechanicery, it can be a good time. Or a terrible time. Mostly a terrible time.

haha its only terrible if you have something difficult to do, its cold out, and/or you are in a rush. Certainly always a learning experience!
